Carlton East & West is a design for two buildings facing each other across Carlton Street in downtown Halifax on very tight urban lots, bordering on a garden-like tree-lined cemetery to the north, with taller 1970’s apartment buildings for its surrounding neighbours. The design challenge was to create a building mass that acts a bridge between the taller, apartment tower neighbours, and the cemetery, while at the same time maximizing the development opportunity. The buildings are designed to be read together, and share a design and material palette, creating a connection between each other and framing a gateway to the cemetery beyond. Two storey town house units take advantage of the garden views to the north, each with a private outdoor terrace.
